Avalanche Activity

CM 9/3 Gale force Southerly winds, snow and blizzards. Unstable windslab on NW to E aspects above 850m. Cornices. Aval Haz Moderate.

Forecast Snow Stability: Fresh unstable windslab will form in steep sheltered locations mainly on North-West through North to East aspects above 850 metres. Greatest accumulations will be around gully tops and coire rims. Cornices will also form on these aspects and will be prone to collapse. Other localised aspects and elevations may also be affected. The existing snow exposed to the strong winds will be mainly firm and well bonded. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: An unsettled period with strong to gale force Southerly winds. Precipitation early overnight and throughout the day will fall as snow mainly above 800 metres with blizzard conditions. The freezing level will be around 800 metres rising to 1000 metres by late morning. During the afternoon the wind will ease with snow down to lower levels. Observed Weather Influences: After a cold and clear night, a bright and sunny day with increasing cloud cover late morning and into the afternoon. Fresh to strong South-Easterly winds. The freezing level being around 850 metres. ObservedSnowStability: The snowpack is generally firm and well bonded. Aspects exposed to the sun have softened on the surface, persistently shaded snow remained frozen. Cornices that are present mainly on East aspects remain fragile. The avalanche hazard is Low.
