Avalanche Activity

Forecast Snow Stability: Fresh unstable windslab will develop through the period mainly on North-West to North-East aspects above 700 metres. Sheltered locations on West and East aspects will also be affected. Fragile cornices will be found above these aspects. On other aspects the snowpack will be mostly firm, scoured and stable. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Gale force South-South-Easterly winds overnight will ease and veer to become fresh from the South-South-West. Overnight snow above 300 metres followed by showers falling as snow above around 700 metres. The freezing level will rise to around 800 metres during the day. Observed Weather Influences: It was a dry day with light but increasing Southerly winds. The freezing level rose to around 400 metres. ObservedSnowStability: The older snowpack remains firm and stable. There is a surface layer of soft unconsolidated snow to low levels which has good stability. Localised areas of moderately bonded windslab are present around high summits and ridges. The avalanche hazard is Low.
