Points saillants

Dangerous avalanche conditions exist above 8,500 feet. It is possible for a rider to trigger an avalanche on a steep, wind affected slope. Avalanches failing within the new snow could step down into old snow, breaking wider than expected. Unseasonable warm weather and a sensitive snowpack warrant cautious backcountry travel.

    Strong winds blowing from the southwest continue to form fresh slabs on leeward slopes. These slabs could be 1 foot deep and easy to trigger in steep terrain. Upside down or slabby snow and cracking around your sled or skis could indicate an unstable slab. Wind slabs at middle elevations will become possible by the end of the day as temperatures decrease, allowing for snowfall instead of rain.

    A new snow avalanche could break into old layers buried earlier this season. An avalanche breaking deeper would be large enough to bury or injure a rider.

    Weak snow formed in November sits at the bottom of the snowpack. While the chance of triggering an avalanche on this layer is unlikely, an avalanche failing within the new snow could put enough weight on the snowpack to break deeper into old snow. Very steep, shallow, rocky areas are most suspect.

    Near and above freezing temperatures are forcing the snowpack to go through rapid change, which can lead to unpredictable avalanche conditions. Cautious route finding and conservative decision making should be used around steep terrain

Avalanche Discussion

Rain and warm temperatures could lead to wet snow avalanches at middle elevations. While wet avalanches might not be deep, they could stack up debris in terrain trap features such as road cuts and gullies.

On December 10th, a rain crust formed on most aspects at middle and upper elevations. Initially, it seems that snow falling on top of this crust has bonded well, but we have seen a report of an avalanche failing on this crust. Avalanches failing in relation to this rain crust could propagate wide and be very large. Take a look at this avalanche from the Tetons that failed around the rain crust. With warm temperatures and rain at mid elevations, the snowpack is undergoing rapid change and needs time to adjust.
