Points saillants

Avalanche conditions will be more heightened in the southwest corner of the zone, near the Salmon la Sac and Teanaway drainages and close to the Cascade crest. You may be able to trigger small avalanches in steep terrain where surface snow is poorly bonded to older layers or where the wind may have formed small drifts in the past couple of days. Check how the snow slides before committing to large, steep slopes.

    You may be able to trigger small, loose avalanches are in very steep terrain (>40 degrees) especially where you find 6-12 inches of recent snow that slides easily. On most slopes, soft snow will be resting on a slick crust. While these avalanches will be small and easy to predict, they could run far and fast. Steer around likely trigger points like steep rollovers and convex terrain features. Use caution near terrain traps where an avalanche could push you into rocks, trees, or gulleys. Even small avalanches could be dangerous in those areas.

    Be prepared to make your own observations. Use caution on steep slopes if you find cohesive surface snow that slides easily.  If you're traveling near the western border of the zone, check out neighboring Stevens and Snoqualmie Pass forecasts.

Avalanche Discussion

Observers in neighboring zones reported both natural and human triggered loose avalanches in the last couple of days. Recent east and now west wind may have formed very small and shallow drifts on the high peaks. A dusting of snow fell on Sunday on top of 4" of low-density snow from last week. This all rests on a frozen rain crust from December 9th. Take note of what you find above this crust as we head into the next storm cycle. Storms later in the week could bring a rise in avalanche danger.

Conditions may be icy, and difficult to travel through with a breakable crust in some places. Expect shallow snow cover at low elevations and bare ground particularly on low south-facing slopes. Typical early season hazards can be expected with open creeks, stumps and rocks. 

During the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, continue to follow the latest guidance from local, state, and federal health officials. Avoid unnecessary risks that could impact first responders and stress medical resources.  Wear a mask when appropriate, practice social distancing, and consider recreating closer to home.
