Avalanche Activity

In some localities wind and new snow above approximately 2000 m: The current avalanche situation calls for caution.

25 cm of snow, and up to 50 cm in some localities, has fallen since Saturday above approximately 2400 m. As a consequence of new snow and a strong wind, sometimes large wind slabs formed in particular adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls as well as above the tree line. In particular from starting zones at higher altitudes and on wind-loaded slopes medium-sized and large natural avalanches are possible. Avalanches can additionally in isolated cases be released in deep layers, in particular by large additional loads. Wet snow slides are possible. Mostly avalanches are shallow and can be released by a single winter sport participant. Backcountry touring and snowshoe hiking call for extensive experience in the assessment of avalanche danger and careful route selection.

Snowpack Structure

The new snow of the last two days is lying on the unfavourable surface of an old snowpack in particular on very steep sunny slopes. This applies in particular on steep slopes in particular between approximately 2900 and 2300 m. In its middle, the snowpack is faceted. The old snowpack remains generally moist. At low and intermediate altitudes from a snow sport perspective, insufficient snow is lying.

Tendency

In some localities wind and new snow: The danger of dry and moist avalanches will not decrease for the time being.
