In the northeast a considerable avalanche danger will prevail.

Fresh and somewhat older wind slabs are mostly small but in some cases prone to triggering. They are to be evaluated with care and prudence in terrain where there is a danger of falling. Avalanches can additionally in very isolated cases be released in the old snowpack in particular on little used shady slopes. Extremely slopes are to be traversed by snow sport participants one at a time.

Snowpack The fresh snow of recent days has been transported by strong winds from different directions. Over a wide area the snow drift accumulations are lying on a rather favourable old snowpack. Before the recent snowfall, the snowpack had been influenced in many places by the wind, and in east to south to west facing aspects by the sun as well. Only on north facing slopes protected from the wind was the surface of the old snowpack sometimes still faceted and loosely bonded and therefore less favourable. Here in particular, the snow drift accumulations are prone to triggering. In southern Valais and in Grisons, on north facing slopes over a wide area the entire old snowpack was also faceted and loosely bonded. Here in isolated cases, avalanches can still be triggered in the weak old snowpack. For more than a week, however, no such avalanche releases have been reported. Despite the recent snowfalls, the snow depths remain well below average throughout the Swiss Alps. On the flat sites occupied by the measuring stations at high altitudes, the values are only around half those usually recorded. Observed weather review Monday, 27.02.2023 The night was mostly overcast and some snow fell locally even at low altitudes. During the day it was partly sunny in the west and in Grisons, otherwise most cloudy. Fresh snow From Sunday afternoon until Monday afternoon:

• Valais, central and southern Ticino: 5 to 10 cm
• Northern flank of the Alps: a few centimetres in some localities

Temperature At midday at 2000 m: about -6 °C Wind

• During the night in the Prealps, a strong bise wind, easing during the day
• During the night on the northern Alpine ridge, strong, in the other regions and generally during the day, light to moderate from the south

Weather forecast through Tuesday, 28.02.2023 During the night it will be mostly overcast; in the south a little snow will fall, even at low altitudes. In particular in the south, dense cloud will persist in the morning. Otherwise it will be quite sunny in the mountains. Fresh snow On Monday night, approximately 5 cm of snow will fall in the central part of the southern flank of the Alps. Temperature At midday at 2000 m: about -4 °C in the north and -6 °C in the south Wind

• Light to moderate from the south

Outlook through Thursday, 02.03.2023 Wednesday will be mostly sunny in the mountains. On Thursday a little snow may fall in the south, otherwise it will be partly sunny in the mountains. On both days the zero degree level will be between 2000 m in the north and approximately 1500 m in the south. The wind will be light to moderate from southerly directions. The danger of dry avalanches will decrease. Isolated moist snow avalanches can occur during the day.
