Steamboat & Flat Tops

An Avalanche Watch is in effect for the Park Range and Flat Tops. Expect very dangerous avalanche conditions to develop by Friday morning and continue through Saturday morning as a potent storm impacts the mountains.

Thursday's avalanche conditions are dangerous. You can trigger large avalanches that can bury and kill you on steep slopes where you find about a foot of recent snow resting on top of old, weak snow. You may trigger one of these avalanches from a distance or below, so give yourself a wide berth around any suspect slope. Watch for signs of drifting snow, like smooth-looking pillows and building cornices. Seek wind-sheltered slopes less than about 30 degrees if you see any signs of unstable snow, like shooting cracks, or hear an audible collapse.
