Points saillants

watch for blowing snow. Light snow and moderate to strong winds will likely form new wind slabs in exposed terrain.

Problèmes avalancheux

  • Wind Slabs

    • Alpin
    • Limite forestière
    • Sous la limite forestière
    Probabilité
    Likely
    Taille
    1–1.5

Wind slabs could be found on north and east aspects in exposed treeline and alpine terrain. Strong winds mean that wind slabs could form further down slope than expected.

  • Cornices

    • Alpin
    • Limite forestière
    • Sous la limite forestière
    Probabilité
    Possible
    Taille
    1–2

Cornices have grown large recently. Give them a wide berth when travelling on or below ridges. The likelihood of cornice falls can increase with solar input.

Confidence

High - We have a good understanding of the snowpack structure and confidence in the weather forecast

Weather Forecast

Monday night: Light flurries bringing up to 5 cm of new snow with moderate to strong southwest winds. Low of -4 at 1100m.

Tuesday: Mostly cloudy with flurries bringing up to 5 cm of new snow with moderate southwest winds. Freezing level rising to 1000 m.

Wednesday: Cloudy with flurries bringing up to 5 cm of new snow with light to moderate southwest winds. Freezing level rising to 1100 m.

Thursday: Mostly cloudy with light flurries bringing trace amounts of new snow with moderate southwest winds. Low of -3 at 1100 m.

Avalanche Summary

No new avalanches were reported on Sunday.

On Friday ski cutting produced wind slab avalanches up to size 1.5. Several wet loose avalanches to size 1.5 were also observed, these avalanches were on steep low elevation features.

Snowpack Summary

New wind slabs will likely form in exposed terrain . Moist snow could be observed at lower elevations.

A couple of sun crusts exist in the upper snowpack but none have been identified as layers of particular concern. The lower snowpack is thought to be well settled.

Terrain and Travel

  • Be careful with wind slabs, especially in steep, unsupported and/or convex terrain features.
  • Watch for newly formed and reactive wind slabs as you transition into wind affected terrain.
  • Minimize your exposure time below cornices.
