Points saillants

Keep an eye out for small wind slabs that may be forming above treeline in the Icefields area on Friday.

Problèmes avalancheux

  • Wind Slabs

    • Alpin
    • Limite forestière
    • Sous la limite forestière
    Probabilité
    Unlikely - Possible
    Taille
    1–2

Small pockets of wind slabs are present in lee features and sit above a weak layer of facets or surface hoar.

  • Deep Persistent Slabs

    • Alpin
    • Limite forestière
    • Sous la limite forestière
    Probabilité
    Unlikely - Possible
    Taille
    2–3.5

This problem is low probability but high consequence as it would be releasing near the ground thus with a lot of destructive volume. Be extra cautious where snowpack goes from thick to thin areas.

Confidence

Moderate

  • We are uncertain about forecast precipitation amounts.

Avalanche Summary

No new avalanches observed or reported in the region.

Snowpack Summary

Five to 15 cm sits above a weak layer of surface hoar and facets. This weak layer is more problematic in areas of wind loading. The midpack is dense and supportive in most areas. At the bottom of the snowpack, the weaker, more facetted layer above the ground creates a deep persistent slab.

Terrain and Travel Advice

  • Watch for newly formed and reactive wind slabs as you transition into wind-affected terrain.
  • Avoid thin areas like rocky outcrops where you're most likely to trigger avalanches on deep weak layers.
