Points saillants

Wet loose avalanches will become possible on steep slopes as the snow softens. Deep, wet snow and recent avalanche activity indicate hazardous conditions. Get an early start, monitor the surface as it warms, and reduce your exposure to steep slopes with wet surface snow.

Surfaces will soften quickly this morning as the sun comes out and temperatures rise. Wet loose activity will be possible today on all aspects. Coverage has become more limited at lower elevations and on solar aspects over the past few weeks of very warm temperatures. Areas of greatest concern will be near and above treeline on SE-N-NW aspects. The best way to minimize exposure to this hazard will be to start and end your tour early. Unsupportable wet snow, rollerballs, and recent avalanches indicate that surface snow is already too wet, and it’s time to move to slopes with lower slope angles and minimal overhead hazards.

Avalanche Discussion

It’s been over a week since overnight temperatures dropped below freezing, even at upper elevations. The theme across the range remains wet snow and diminishing coverage.

While not ideal for backcountry enthusiasts, the amount of snow loss we have seen in March has been impressive. Keep this in mind as you make your plans for the day. Access may be more difficult than you would typically expect, and travel routes may need to be adjusted. A weak surface refreeze means surfaces will melt more quickly, and wet, punchy snow will make travel difficult in either direction. Timing remains your best tool for limiting exposure to avalanches and finding the highest-quality skiing and riding. Get an early start and return to the trailhead before the heat of the day.
