Avalanche Activity

NC for 10/12: Snowfall. Avalanches likely, steep E through S to W aspects above 950m. Cross loading NW aspects. Considerable Hazard.

Forecast Snow Stability: As the day progresses, due to significant drifting and developing unstable windslab accumulations, avalanches are likely on East through South to West aspects above 950 metres. Areas mostly affected will be steep terrain, such gully tops and flanks, crag aprons and coire rims. Soft unstable cornices will continue to develop on these aspects. Cross loading will affect other wind sheltered Northerly facing slopes; in particular North-West. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Snowfall will continue throughout the forecast period. This is expected to be heaviest overnight before turning lighter during the day. Moderate North-West winds will veer to become North-Easterlies at day break, later increasing moderate to strong from mid afternoon onwards. The freezing level will rise to 500 metres. Observed Weather Influences: Light snow showers on moderate Northerly winds. Freezing at all levels. ObservedSnowStability: There is a covering of soft snow on all aspects. Localised accumulations of unstable windslab have become more widespread on Easterly to Southerly aspects above 1000 metres. Areas most affected are in steep and convex wind sheltered locations. Deep snow accumulations continue to develop around coire rims and the tops of gullies on some North facing slopes. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
