Wet avalanche concerns will linger until the snowpack fully refreezes. Limit your time spent on or under big slopes where the snowpack feels wet and unsupportable. Refreezing surfaces may set the stage for slick alpine travel on Saturday.

    The likelihood of triggering wet avalanches is decreasing as freezing levels drop and surfaces refreeze. However, this crust may vary in thickness and may not fully cap the wet-snow avalanche problem, especially where the crust is thinner or breaks down with daytime warming. Pay attention to your boot penetration and the thickness of the surface crust as you move through terrain. Punching past your boot tops in wet, mushy snow is a sign the snowpack needs more time to refreeze. Until it does, minimize your exposure to larger slopes greater than 35 degrees and limit your time spent under terrain with weak, sagging cornices that could peel off without warning.

Avalanche Discussion

Mt Hood has not seen temperatures dip below freezing since March 15th. Much of this period has been characterized by warm, windy weather. Throughout the week, alpine winds have kept higher terrain a bit firmer until Friday, when rainfall reached well into upper elevations. Observers near Timberline reported wet, punchy snow up to 8000 ft. Unfortunately, warm, windy temperatures and now rain have decimated the snowpack around Mt. Hood. Lower elevations look sad with a patchy thin snowpack, while middle and upper elevations resemble coverage you'd see in late June rather than late March. 

Freezing levels are forecast to decrease on Friday night, which may allow rain to transition to light snow at upper elevations. If this does occur, it may just be enough to create some small, isolated wind slabs in higher terrain. However, your bigger hazard will likely be slick, refrozen surfaces at upper and middle elevations. Moving forward, you just want to pack the sharps for any objectives in the alpine where surfaces could be icy, particularly during the morning hours or on more shaded aspects.
