    Field observations reported increasing winds throughout the day yesterday with notable wind transport witnessed above treeline and along high-elevation ridgetops.  Extreme winds are expected to continue today with ridge-top gusts reaching close to 100 mph. Continued slab development will be limited by the available snow for transport. However, it remains possible to find reactive wind slabs in specific areas near and above treeline and in high-elevation catchment zones.  Large drifts, recent cornice growth, stiff hollow feeling snow, and uneven snow surfaces are all clues that indicate nearby wind deposits. Do your own localized assessments and be suspect of terrain features that encourage drifting such as the leeward sides of ridgelines, mid-slope depressions, alpine couloirs, gully features, and cross-loaded depressions.

Avalanche Discussion

High-elevation northeast winds are continuing to drive our current avalanche concerns. However, there are several other considerations for the backcountry enthusiast. Continued cold temperatures and strong winds could lead to dangerously cold wind chills in exposed areas at higher elevations. It will be wise to bring extra warm layers and equipment to deal with the elements in the event that you are delayed. Dealing with unforeseen equipment malfunctions or injuries could be a bitterly cold affair. In addition, a variety of surface crusts have been reported throughout the forecast area, making for variable and challenging travel conditions. Equipment like ski and/or boot crampons and an ice ax may not be a bad idea depending on where you wish to travel.
