The most recent snowstorm over the weekend was followed by a few days of strong winds. These conditions have formed a slab over persistent weak layers. As the slab gains strength, the buried weak layers will be hard to detect, and previous tracks are NOT a sign of stability. On February 7, many large natural avalanches failed on buried weak layers. The weight of a single person could trigger dangerous slab avalanches two to five feet in depth, and these slides would most likely have severe to deadly consequences.
