Points saillants

The great skiing continues!

Watch for reactive wind slabs in exposed alpine terrain, and be mindful of deep persistent weak layer when transitioning into areas with a thinner snowpack.

Alpine observations for our forecast are limited.

Moderate winds are creating wind slabs in alpine. Watch for these as you transition into wind-affected terrain and lee features.

The natural avalanche cycle on this layer has ended, but concern about human-triggered avalanches persists. Be wary of shallow areas, as this has been where the bulk of recent large avalanches have started, going from thin to thick (see avalanche summary).

Confidence

Moderate

  • Uncertainty is due to the fact that deep persistent slabs are particularly difficult to forecast.

Snowpack Summary

Moderate winds may develop isolated windslabs in lee alpine features. Surface snow has some surface hoar development, lingering suncrust on steep solar aspects and 20-30cm settled snow in sheltered areas.

There is 40-80 cm over the Dec 15 melt-freeze crust (which is present to 1800-2000 m), 80-160 cm over the November facet/crust interfaces, and, in thinner snowpack areas, facets at the base.

Treeline snow depths range from 100-200+ cm.

Weather Summary

Thurs Night: Mainly cloudy. Alpine temperature: Low -8 °C. Light ridge wind.

Friday: Mainly cloudy with isolated flurries. Alpine temperature: High -6 °C.

Ridge wind southwest: 15-35 km/h.

Saturday: Flurries. Accumulation: 8 cm. Alpine temperature: Low -7 °C, High -3 °C. Ridge wind southwest: 15 km/h gusting to 45 km/h.

Terrain and Travel Advice

  • Watch for newly formed and reactive wind slabs as you transition into wind-affected terrain.
  • If triggered, wind slabs avalanches may step down to deeper layers resulting in larger avalanches.
  • Avoid thin areas like rocky outcrops where you're most likely to trigger avalanches on deep weak layers.
