Forecast Discussion:

12 days of high pressure has allowed the snowpack to settle and gain strength.  The snowpack has been consistently showing signs of good strength and structure in snowpits in multiple locations, elevations and aspects. There has not been any natural or human triggered avalanche activity since the beginning of the month.  The deep slab avalanches that occurred in late January are now believed to be a dormant problem that will require a significant change in weather to reactivate.

Even though the avalanche hazard is low, the mountains remain wild.  Cornices can still fall, and instabilities may still exist in small isolated places, especially in steep rocky terrain.  Maintaining good travel protocols remains important during times of low hazard in case your group finds an unstable pocket of snow.  Good practices include clear group communication and involvement, route finding that seeks to utilize protected terrain and avoids terrain traps, skiing one person at a time in avalanche terrain, grouping up in and being aware of safe zones, and avoiding travelling on or below cornices.

A slight increase in wind began overnight and is forecasted to continue today.  This will have little effect on stability as little to no snow is available for transport.  The wind may do us a favor and knock down facets that have formed at the surface at low elevations and protected terrain.
