Forecast Snow Stability: This evening (Thursday) further deposits of unstable windslab will accumulate in wind sheltered locations above 950 metres. Gully tops, and scarp slopes on North through to East aspects will be most affected. Unstable cornices will continue to form above these aspects. Wind scoured slopes will remain firm, icy and stable. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Heavy showers, of snow, above 900 metres will die out this evening. It will be mainly dry with occasional light snow above 800 metres during the day. Freezing level will lower from 950 metres to 750 metres. During this evening Gale force Southerly winds will decrease to Moderate. During the day winds will remain moderate and back from North-Westerly to South-Westerly by the end of the period.

Observed Weather Influences: There were frequent heavy showers which fell as snow above around 800 metres during the day. The freezing level was around 950 metres. Winds were South-East veering South-Westerly and Strong to Gale Force. ObservedSnowStability: Below 950 metres the existing snowpack is generally consolidating. Above this height, in gully tops, scarp slopes, and wind sheltered locations, areas of unstable windslab have developed on mainly North-West to North-East aspects. Fragile cornices are also building on these aspects. The avalanche hazard is Considerable.
