Points saillants

Multiple inches of rain on snow will bring High avalanche danger Tuesday night. Natural avalanches will subside on Wednesday, while danger will stay elevated. Stay far from steep slopes and well out from under large avalanche paths, rock faces, and cornices.

    The best strategy is to avoid steep slopes with a saturated, wet snowpack. You can trigger dangerously large wet avalanches on most steep slopes. There could even be isolated natural avalanches, especially in very steep terrain or on rock features. Stay far out from under any unsupported features where snow could fall down from above.

    A large wet slab or glide avalanche on Peak 6178' near Yellow Aster Butte. Probably released early on Dec 7th during heavy rainfall. East aspect at 6000'.

Avalanche Discussion

Several inches of rain are falling in the zone and will continue into Wednesday. While temperatures will begin to cool, and rain should taper off, the wet instability will remain. Travel will be difficult in the rain-soaked snowpack. Your best option is to wait until the snowpack begins to freeze before embarking on an adventure int he mountains. 

With the lack of observations from the West Central forecast zone, it's difficult to accurately say what you will find out there. Be ready to assess stability and find conditions different than you expect. The diverse range of weather effects from this storm means the actual avalanche danger and the kind of avalanches you might find vary widely between different parts of the same forecast zone.
