Points saillants

Human-triggered avalanches are likely on sunlit slopes as the snowpack warms and becomes sloppy and wet. Heating will be most pronounced in steep, rocky terrain sheltered from the wind. Additionally, on shady slopes, it still possible to trigger a hard slab avalanche 1-2' thick, possibly thicker in wind loaded areas.

    The widespread natural avalanche cycle on solar aspects seems to have peaked 2 days ago with a few new avalanches reported regionally yesterday and none reported in this zone.  Persistent weak layers have become more difficult to trigger in places that have warmed and refrozen, but you could still trigger a large avalanche in locations warmed significantly by the sun or that had light refreezes overnight. Increased cloud cover today may shade slopes and keep south facing slopes icy and more stable. Higher elevation weather stations and those east of the Continental Divide only cooled to the upper 20's last night, so warming will occur quickly today on east facing slopes. Shady aspects that have stayed cool during past few days still have dry hard slabs that you can trigger on the thick, weak layers of facets and depth hoar in this zone.

    This slope at 9,400 feet failed widely in the afternoon of January 30th.  After two days of above freezing temps, water flowing through the snowpack reached down to the weak layer of facets, or possibly a crust with facets, and tipped over the first domino in the weak layer.

Avalanche Discussion

Spring-like conditons continue today as June-uary weather stretches into February. Skiers who timed things right yesterday found spring corn on sunny slopes before surfaces got too mushy while soft-dry powder riding remained in shady areas. Today is a good day to go observe the havoc that the thaw brought to the mountains and the surface hoar that has developed at night.  That layer may become our next weak layer to track after new snow arrives tonight and continues over the weekend. 

Continue to ski and ride mindfully and remember the basics that increase your margin of safety.

  • Ride one at a time on steep slopes and keep an eye on your partner.
  • Use safe zones to regroup. Be sure they are actually safe.
  • Everyone in your group should have a beacon, probe and shovel and know how to use it. Everyone.
  • Avoid riding on steep slopes above terrain traps like trees and creek beds.
  • Exit sunny slopes when snow becomes wet and slushy.
