Avalanche Activity

Forecast Snow Stability: Unstable windslab will be deposited throughout the period on South-West, through West to North aspects above 900 metres. North-East aspects will be subject to cross loading. Coire headwalls, crag aprons and steep slopes will be most affected. At lower elevations steep banks and burn lines may be subject to isolated deposits. Elsewhere above 1000 metres weaknesses remain present beneath a widespread friable crust. Fragile cornices will develop. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Snow is expected to fall above 300 metres overnight, followed by a largely dry day. Winds will be mostly East-North-East, very strong overnight, backing to the North-East and decreasing to fresh by the end of the day. The freezing level will be between 400 and 500 metres during the day. Observed Weather Influences: Snow fell throughout the period accompanied by very strong to gale force winds from the East-South-East. The freezing level was around 700 metres at midday. ObservedSnowStability: Unstable windslab continues to develop on West to North aspects above 900 metres. North-East aspects are also subject to cross loading. Coire headwalls, crag aprons and steep wind sheltered locations are most affected. Elsewhere, some areas are becoming wind scoured exposing very firm snow or ice. A dusting of snow is present down to around 500 metres. Fragile cornices continue to develop. The avalanche hazard is Considerable.
