Snowpack Structure

The fresh wind slabs are lying on unfavourable layers in particular on steep shady slopes at elevated altitudes. Over a wide area new snow and wind slabs are lying on the smooth surface of an old snowpack. Only a small amount of snow is lying for the time of year. Snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind.

Tendency

20 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, will fall above approximately 1200 m. The avalanche danger will increase but remain within the current danger level.

Avalanche Activity

The mostly small wind slabs represent the main danger.

The more recent wind slabs can be released in particular on steep shady slopes above the tree line, especially adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls. Avalanches can in very isolated cases penetrate near-ground layers of the snowpack and reach medium size. Sunshine and high temperatures will give rise in the late morning to moistening of the snowpack in some cases. Isolated small moist avalanches are possible as the moisture increases. Restraint should be exercised because avalanches can sweep people along and give rise to falls.
