Avalanche Activity

CM for 04/01/22 Mainly steep E to S aspects above 900m. Cross-loading possible onto some NE facing gullies. Moderate Hazard.

Forecast Snow Stability: Cold, weak new windslab will become more widespread on steep East to South aspects above 900 metres during the day. Cross-loading possible on selected sheltered North-East facing gullies. Stronger winds will scour many exposed areas clear of snow but in turn redistribute it as new windslab onto lee areas, amplifying the effects of snowfall. New cornice development anticipated above steepest lee slopes later. Good stability in all wind-exposed locations. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Frequent snow showers commencing overnight and extending throughout the day. Becoming much colder: freezing level down to 300 metres. West-North-West winds increasing to moderate to strong North-Westerly. Observed Weather Influences: Overnight rain at all levels turned to light snow showers as the freezing level fell. Moderate West-South-West winds eased and became North-West during the day. ObservedSnowStability: Good stability in most locations. Limited drifting gave rise to thin, narrow patches of soft, cold windslab but only on North-East to South-East facing coire rims and steep gully tops above 950 metres. Covering of soft fresh snow in all other locations. Old refrozen snowpack remains very patchy. The avalanche hazard is Low.
