Points saillants

Avalanches are not expected today, but there may be small pockets of unstable snow high in the alpine where wind has drifted new snow into denser slabs. Be cautious in extreme terrain where even a small slide could have large consequences.

Avalanche Discussion

Up to four inches of new low-density snow fell on Monday and Tuesday. Temperatures have remained cold since then and there has been some wind. Avalanche hazard is low overall but avalanches may be possible in isolated areas high above treeline where there is more than 6" of wind-drifted snow in steep (above 40 degrees) terrain. Look for wind-drifted "pillows" of snow below ridgelines and signs of instability like cracking or hollow sounding snow. While any avalanche will be small in size, assess the consequences of taking a fall from getting knocked off balance by moving snow. There are lots of exposed rocks above treeline. Warmer temperatures yesterday and today should help to remove any lingering instabilities in the new snow.
