Points saillants

Warming temperatures and sunshine will create small wet loose avalanches on steep slopes. Pay attention to signs of warming surfaces such as rollerballs, and wet, heavy, or punchy snow. Use caution on slopes steeper than 35 degrees when you notice these signs of instability.

    Strong sunshine and rapidly warming temperatures may create unstable snow in the form of small wet loose avalanches on Wednesday. Look for indicators of wet activity such as moist surface snow, rollerballs, and other small fan-shaped avalanches. The potential size of loose wet slides will increase where you find more recent snow especially as you go further west in the zone. While loose avalanches are predictable, they may grow larger and could be dangerous in consequential terrain and near terrain traps. 

    Directly north facing slopes at upper elevations may stay cooler, although temperatures should be warm enough that we could see wet slides occur even on shaded slopes below treeline.

    Cornices may be reactive to the weight of a person, especially in areas where they are recently formed. Give them plenty of room when traveling on ridges and stay out from underneath them.

Avalanche Discussion

We are in a warming trend, and Wednesday should be the warmest and sunniest day of the week. Cool overnight temperatures should quickly change, and expect snow surfaces to melt down quickly with the rapidly warming temperatures. On Tuesday, the sun hit many slopes, and may have created a crust in many areas. We have uncertainty, and minimal information on the reactivity of lingering wind slabs that were likely created with Sunday's storm.

On Sunday, a strong winter storm brought heavy snowfall with strong to extreme westerly winds. By Monday, snow totals recorded at weather stations were 11" at Washington Pass and 10" at Harts Pass. Actual snow totals may have been higher near the Cascade Crest. 

Since the beginning of March, the region has undergone a slow warming trend. Observers have reported sporadic cornice fall. The lower snowpack is generally well settled in the zone.
