Avalanche Activity

The wind slabs can be released easily in some places in particular on steep shady slopes. Weak layers in the old snowpack necessitate caution and restraint. As a consequence of warming wet loose snow avalanches are possible.

Snowpack Structure

The snowpack is not distinctly layered and its surface has a melt-freeze crust that is strong in many cases. The surface of the snowpack will soften during the day. The spring-like weather conditions will give rise to unfavourable bonding of the snowpack in some cases on very steep sunny slopes. These conditions will cause a weakening of the snowpack in gullies and bowls and behind abrupt changes in terrain. As a consequence of highly fluctuating temperatures and solar radiation a treacherous avalanche situation will develop. This applies in particular on steep south, southwest and west facing slopes above the tree line.
