Avalanche Summary

You can trigger an avalanche in wind-drifted snow which breaks into a deeper, more dangerous avalanche. Identify wind-drifted slopes by fresh cornice growth, sculpted or smooth, pillowed snow textures. Avoid areas where the snow cover thins, such as gully edges, convexities, or rocky areas, where you can impact deeper weak layers and trigger a more dangerous avalanche. Stick to slopes less than about thirty degrees steepness or more wind-sheltered terrain for safer options.
