Points saillants

Soft surface slabs lie upon a variety of sliding surfaces and weak layers. Yesterday, a skier triggered a soft slab on an east-southeasterly facing slope on Olive Oil at an elevation close to 9,000 feet. This two foot slab failed on a sun crust buried after the last drought cycle. Backcountry travelers could trigger similar slides in steep, avalanche-prone terrain today. These slabs also have some potential to step down to deeper layers of weak faceted snow, especially at the mid elevations. Evaluate the snow and terrain carefully, and avoid areas of concern.

    Persistent slabs lie upon sun crusts, wind pack, near surface facets and surface hoar at varying depths throughout the snowpack. These potential sliding surfaces formed during previous dry spells, creating a snowpack with poor structure. As the snowpack adjusts to recent loading events, these weak layers are becoming less reactive. However, skiers and riders still have the potential to trigger these slabs to depths of one to three feet.

Avalanche Discussion

Zonal flow will develop sometime before Friday morning. This change in the weather pattern will bring moderate to heavy snow showers, strong winds and warming temperatures. Six to twelve inches of new snow could accumulate by Friday evening. Southwesterly ridgetop winds will increase to 25 to 35 miles per hour. Overnight lows will hover near zero before rising into the mid teens during the day.On Friday, the general avalanche hazard is expected to be MODERATE in the Tetons and Greys River area, and CONSIDERABLE in the Togwotee Pass area. New snow, combined with strong westerly ridgetop winds, will create new wind slabs on leeward slopes. These new slabs could be triggered by backcountry travelers in steep, wind-loaded starting zones. As snowfall accumulates throughout the day, the likelihood of triggering these slabs will increase as they grow in depth and volume. This scenario will also add weight to existing weak layers beneath the new/old snow interface. Monitor conditions closely, and be willing to alter your plans if circumstances warrant.
