Points saillants

Yesterday's snow and strong winds and today's sunshine and rising temperatures will combine to create dangerous conditions at the upper elevations. Skiers and riders could trigger large slab avalanches. Loose snow avalanches may release naturally on steep sunlit aspects. A careful evaluation of the snowpack and conservative terrain choices are essential. Avalanches are unlikely below an elevation of 8,000 feet.

    At the mid and upper elevations southwest to west winds have formed wind slabs on steep slopes. These slabs could be triggered by the weight of a person and are likely to be one to three feet deep in upper elevation avalanche starting zones and one to two feet deep in avalanche prone terrain features at the mid elevations. Sunshine and rising temperatures will increase the sensitivity of these slabs to human triggers and could cause natural releases.

Avalanche Discussion

Temperatures will be even warmer on Tuesday. Overnight lows are expected to drop into the 20s under mostly clear skies. Daytime highs will rise into the 40s in the mountains and into the 50s in the valleys. Tomorrows warm temperatures will increase the general avalanche hazard in the mountains. The general avalanche hazard is expected to be MODERATE in the early morning hours and is likely to increase to CONSIDERABLE during the warmer portion of the day. Humans who venture onto steep avalanche prone slopes could trigger wind slab avalanches during the morning hours and wet slab and wet loose snow avalanches as temperatures increase.
