Points saillants

In the western half of this zone, you could trigger a large avalanche where the wind has formed drifts and stiffened the snow surface. Near and east of HWY 75, triggering a large, thick avalanche remains a concern on steep slopes facing the northern two-thirds of the compass. Anticipate wet snow avalanches in very steep, rocky terrain receiving direct sun.

    Slabs exist above widespread, weak layers (facets, surface hoar, crusts, and combinations). Persistent Slab avalanches are most likely in thinner snowpacks around the Wood River Valley. Before triggering an avalanche, you may not experience obvious signs of instability like snowpack cracking and collapsing or whumpfing. Persistent Slabs can release in surprising ways and break much wider than expected. You are most likely to trigger a dense, 2-4 foot thick avalanche where:

    • The snowpack is less than 4 feet thick—relatively shallower spots may exist where the wind frequently blows, and the slab is not uniformly thick.
    • Any part of the slope you are on or connected to is steeper than about 35 degrees
    • The slope faces the northern 2/3 of the compass
    • A smaller wind slab or loose snow avalanche overloads the buried weak layers

    Additional Discussion - Wind Slabs: Near Dollarhide and in the Soldiers, look for sensitive wind slabs near ridgelines and along steep mid-slope gullies. You can reduce your chances of triggering a wind slab by avoiding slopes with obvious signs of wind-loading, such as new cornice growth and large dunes or pillows of wind-blown snow. Cornices are large and may be unstable. Warming temperatures may cause overhanging cornices to sag and fail. Limit time beneath these features and give them a wide berth when traveling along ridges.

    Anticipate loose snow avalanches on very steep, rocky slopes receiving direct sun. Avalanche activity is most likely on S-facing slopes by midday and on W-facing terrain this afternoon. These slides often initiate near the base of trees and rocks, gathering snow and growing in size as they move downhill. Rollerballs, or pinwheels, signify that the snow is heating up, and wet avalanches may soon follow. 

    While most will start small, they will be plenty large enough to knock you off your feet and carry you into unwanted terrain. Even small slides are consequential above terrain traps such as gullies, creeks, and thick timber. Plan your day to avoid lingering under steep, sunny slopes.

Avalanche Discussion

Avalanche problems vary across the zone:

  • West - From Dollarhide Summit west into the Soldiers, wind slabs top the problem list. Over the past two days, Soldier Mountain Cat Ski staff have been able to intentionally trigger wind slabs with ski cuts. Strong wind Monday night into Tuesday built sensitive cornices and drifts that remain a concern today. 
  • East - From Dollarhide Summit east into the Wood River Valley, persistent slabs top the problem list. We've observed a couple of very large slab avalanches in the Boulder Mountains that we estimate released during recent intense wind-loading. Based on the depth and aspect of the slides, it's likely that these slabs released on a combination of crusts and facets. Steep, shady NW-N-NE facing slopes in the Wood River Valley have been a hot spot for Persistent Slab activity. 
  • Entire Zone - It's day 2 in a string of warm, sunny days. Last night, temperature inversions kept upper elevations warmer than lower elevations and will be ahead of the curve today as surfaces soften. Today's sunshine will have to overcome crusts at the surface, but alpine temperatures in the 40s F and strong sunshine may eventually turn the surface to mush. This wet snow may slide far and fast on crusts beneath the surface. The timing of wet snow avalanche problems varies greatly with location, aspect, and elevation and is nearly impossible to predict. Build this uncertainty into your travel plans and limit time on or under steep, sun-drenched slopes.
