Central Cascades

For Sunday, the avalanche danger will remain low. However low danger does not mean no danger. Always be mindful of unstable snow, especially in steep and dangerous terrain. Other hazards exist, such as low snow coverage, firm conditions and fall potential on steep, icy slopes.

Continue to keep an eye out for unstable snow, even on a low avalanche hazard day. I do not expect any wet loose activity for Sunday. However, be on the lookout for roller balls and a softening snow surface, especially on steep, sunny slopes. 

On Saturday, I traveled around Broken Hand and the north side of Broken Top. I primarily found firm snow conditions throughout my tour.  Winds were moderate with old/eroded snow being blown around at ridge tops. Even though old snow was being blown around, I did not find any cracking, whumpfing or see any recent avalanches. Around noon the snow surface was beginning to soften on southerly slopes, however no wet loose activity was observed. 

While touring, I used all the tools including ski crampons, boot crampons and ice ax. I found some very firm/icy conditions (especially on shaded north facing aspects). A slip on some of these slopes could lead to a long fall.
