Avalanche Activity

Gradual increase in avalanche danger as a consequence of new snow and strong wind.

As a consequence of new snow and a strong wind, further wind slabs will form in the course of the day in particular in gullies and bowls. In particular on wind-loaded slopes the avalanche prone locations will become more prevalent as the day progresses. The new snow and wind slabs of the last three days are lying on top of a weakly bonded old snowpack above approximately 2000 m. The avalanches can be triggered in deep layers of the snowpack and reach large size in isolated cases. Backcountry touring calls for experience in the assessment of avalanche danger.

Snowpack Structure

10 to 30 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, will fall on Sunday above approximately 2000 m. Over a wide area 5 to 20 cm of snow fell on Thursday above approximately 2000 m. In all aspects snow depths vary greatly above approximately 2200 m, depending on the infuence of the wind. Adjacent to ridgelines and in pass areas above approximately 2200 m hardly any snow is lying. Shady slopes: The snowpack consists of faceted crystals.

Tendency

In some localities increase in avalanche danger as a consequence of new snow and wind.
