Points saillants

The general avalanche hazard is MODERATE above an elevation of 8,500 feet. Wind slabs exist on very steep slopes and could be triggered by backcountry riders and skiers. Avalanches are generally unlikely below 8500 feet but could occur in isolated pockets in very steep terrain where recent snowfall has accumulated.

Periods of strong winds from varying directions over the last week have formed wind slabs in very steep terrain such as chutes and around cliff areas. Backcountry recreationalists could trigger pockets of these instabilities with depths to two feet.

Avalanche Discussion

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )High pressure is to build in overnight. Skies are to be mostly clear in the morning. Limited pacific moisture from northwest is to increase clouds and bring some mountain snow showers in the afternoon. Temperatures are to rise from the single digits to the mid twenties. Northwest winds are to have ten to fifteen mile per hour averages. The general avalanche hazard is expected to be Moderate above 8500 feet. Recent storms and strong winds from varying directions have formed surface slabs in very steep avalanche terrain. Areas most susceptible are couloirs and wind loaded areas in and around cliff bands. Below 8500 feet isolated pockets to a foot in depth could be triggered in certain steep features where snow collects.
