Points saillants

Strong west-northwest winds and new snow have created new soft slabs up to one foot deep in upper elevation starting zones. Pockets of older surface slab 12 to 18 inches deep also exist at the mid and upper elevations. On steep slopes slab avalanches could be triggered by the weight of a single person. Careful snow and terrain evaluations are necessary on avalanche prone slopes. Beware of terrain traps and cliff areas. At the lower elevations mostly stable snow exist and avalanches are unlikely.

Avalanche Discussion

The moist northwest flow will continue. Skies will be mostly cloudy with periods of light snowfall or flurries in the mountains. Accumulations are expected to be limited to an inch or two. Temperatures will rise into the 20s from overnight lows in the single digits. Winds will be westerly at 10 to 15 miles per along the highest ridge crest. The general avalanche hazard is expected to be MODERATE. Soft, surface slabs up to 18 inches in depth lie upon buried surface hoar, light density snow and on southerly aspects; sun crusts. On steep slopes these slabs could be triggered by the weight of a single person.
