Avalanche Summary

You might be able to trigger a dangerous slab avalanche where you find firm, wind-drifted snow resting on a layer of weak snow. You are most likely to encounter this slab-over-weak layer combination on slopes that face northwest through north to southeast near and above treeline. Avoid traveling on steep, wind-drifted slopes facing these directions to reduce your chances of being caught in a slab avalanche.

If you find your feet, skis, or machine sinking deep into moist or wet snow, even on shady slopes, consider sticking to slopes less than about 40 degrees to avoid being caught in a loose avalanche. These can gouge into weak snow and on sustained, steep slopes they might even grow large enough to bury you.
