Avalanche Activity

LO for 05.02 Instabilities on N through E to SE aspects above 900m. Fragile cornices. Avalanche Hazard Considerable.

Forecast Snow Stability: Additional unstable windslab will continue to build on North through East to South-East aspects above 900m. Fragile cornices will also be present on these aspects. Below 900m on these same aspects, localised areas of unstable windslab will build in wind sheltered locations such as gully lines and convexities. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Severe Westerly gales are expected throughout the forecast period with frequent snow showers. The freezing level will briefly rise to 900m in the morning then drop back down to 400m by late afternoon. Observed Weather Influences: Gale force Westerly winds. Frequent snow showers. Freezing level around 400m. ObservedSnowStability: Accumulations of weakly bonded windslab have developed on North through East to South-East aspects above 600m. Greatest instability is within wind sheltered steep convex terrain, crag aprons, scarp slopes and ridge flanks. Fragile cornices have developed above these aspects. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
