The older wind slabs will be covered with new snow and therefore difficult to recognise. The avalanche prone locations are to be found in particular on very steep shady slopes at elevated altitudes and in the vicinity of peaks.

Avalanche Activity

The avalanche prone locations are to be found in particular on steep north, northeast and northwest facing slopes at elevated altitudes and on wind-loaded slopes.

Snowpack Structure

In particular above the tree line snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind. The old wind slabs will be covered with new snow in some cases and therefore difficult to recognise. Low and intermediate altitudes as well as wind-protected sunny slopes: The solar radiation will give rise as the day progresses to gradual softening of the snowpack.
