Points saillants

Above 8000 feet, the chance persists for snowmobilers to trigger dangerous hard slab avalanches in isolated areas. Shallow wind slab avalanches could also be triggered by riders or skiers in steep wind loaded terrain. Avalanches are unlikely below 8000 feet today.

Some potential could remain for snowmobilers to trigger deep hard slabs in isolated areas where weak faceted snow persist near the base of the snowpack. These dangerous slabs could have depths to five feet.

Slab avalanches up to two feet in depth could be triggered by riders or skiers who venture into very steep terrain and cliff areas. These slabs will become more sensitive today as they are weakened by rising temperatures and direct sunlight.

Avalanche Discussion

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )Thursday looks to be mostly dry and clear with a slight chance for isolated snow showers or flurries in the mountains. Mountain temperatures are to rise from the teens to the upper twenties to low thirties and winds are to be light. The general avalanche hazard will remain Moderate in western Wyoming. In very steep terrain that has seen recent wind loading, soft slabs to two foot depths could be triggered. In the Togwotee Pass area a slight chance also exists to trigger older hard slabs.
