Points saillants

Isolated pockets of hard wind slab exist at the upper elevations. These slabs could pose a threat to backcountry travelers venturing into extreme terrain. Mostly stable snow exists and avalanches are unlikely in less radical terrain, and at the mid and lower elevations.

    At the upper elevations, isolated pockets of hard wind slab, with depths of six to 18 inches, lie upon sun crusts and faceted snow. Backcountry travelers could trigger these slabs in very steep, avalanche prone terrain. While small, these slides could quickly accelerate and have the potential to carry skiers or riders over cliff bands or into terrain traps. On sunlit aspects, the potential to trigger these slabs will increase as the day warms.

Similar conditions will continue on Tuesday with mostly clear skies and inverted temperatures. Overnight lows in the mountains will be near 20 before rising to around 30 during the day. Westerly ridgetop winds will range from 10 to 20 miles per hour.The general avalanche hazard is expected to be LOW on Tuesday. At the upper elevations, backcountry travelers might be able to trigger an isolated pocket of shallow hard slab in very steep, avalanche prone terrain. While small, these slides have the potential to carry skiers or riders over cliff bands or into terrain traps.
