Avalanche Summary

You can trigger large avalanches within the new snow. Strong westerly winds will drift the new snow on north through east to southeast-facing slopes creating the most dangerous slopes. You may see unstable snow, like cracking or collapsing within the new snow. Look for and avoid slopes below ridgelines or cross-loaded gullies where you find smooth lens-shaped pillows of snow or see fresh cornices forming. Below treeline, be cautious where you find more than eight inches of fresh snow, as an avalanche might become large enough to knock you off your feet, taking you for a deadly ride.

Carefully choose terrain as you recreate in the mountains by avoiding travel on or underneath slopes greater than 30 degrees.
