You can trigger a small avalanche in wind-drifted snow on slopes steeper than about 35 degrees, especially on easterly and south-facing slopes near and above treeline. If you hear a hollow sound or see cracks around your feet, you're likely on a wind-loaded slope and should avoid traveling across steep terrain. Even small avalanches can knock you over and take you for a dangerous ride. Seek wind-sheltered terrain at lower elevations for safer travel options.
