Weather Synopsis

On Thursday, visibility will frequently be impaired by clouds and residual fog. Repeated snowfall is possible from the heavy cloud cover, with interims, possible 10 cm by evening. Sunshine is not in the cards. Winds will be blowing at moderate to strong velocity from westerly directions. At 2000 m, temperatures dropping to -4 to -9 degrees. On Friday, cold, often limited visibility to begin with, with a small amount of snowfall. Conditions will improve during the course of the day.

Tendency

Little change is expected. Avoid snowdrift accumulations on steep slopes. The moderate gliding snow activity will continue.

Snowpack Structure

Storm winds, heavy snowfall from Tuesday, followed by measurably higher temperatures on Wednesday, have left compact snowdrift masses behind above the treeline. On Thursday, about 10 cm of cold fresh snowfall is anticipated. There are no strikingly weak layers evident, only in the fractures of the old snow fundament. Exposed zones are windblown, gullies and bowls above the timberline are filled to the brim. Over warm and smooth ground surfaces, the snowpack is gliding.

Avalanche Activity

Avoid snowdrifts above timberline, caution urged towards gliding snow

Above the treeline, the snowdrift problem intensifies in gullies, bowls and leeward terrain, particularly above about 2000 m a slab can be triggered by large additional loading. Danger level: MODERATE. Second danger. On very steep grass-covered slopes, small-to-medium sized glide-snow avalanches can release naturally.
