Points saillants

Low avalanche danger persists in the backcountry. Wet-loose avalanches are unlikely but remain possible in steep, sunny, isolated areas near and below treeline. Evaluate snow conditions as you travel and avoid consequential terrain showing signs of wet-loose snow. Expect variable surfaces.

    This problem is isolated to steep, wind-sheltered southerly aspects that receive direct sunlight, near and below treeline. The greatest risk is being swept off your feet and flushed through terrain hazards. Stay alert for wet snow surfaces underfoot, as today’s warm, sunny weather may increase instability. As always, point releases and roller balls are mother natures warning signs. Keep it pro where it matters.

Avalanche Discussion

The forecast region is currently at low avalanche danger. This does not mean danger is absent. If you're venturing into remote or extreme terrain, be prepared to self-evaluate snow and weather conditions.

Aspiring mountaineers should note that the upper alpine on Mount Shasta (above 12,000 feet) hasn’t been recently evaluated by forecasters. Strong north and northeast winds have been blowing in earnest. It's not out of the question that a fresh wind drift, or two, have formed on southerly aspects. Rime ice coats exposed rocks and will become more hazardous as the sun and warmth loosen its grip. Expect firm, variable surfaces—competence with an ice axe, crampons, and self-arrest skills are essential. 

Recreationalists can expect a whole menu of surface conditions, the majority being wet, or wind effected snow. Melt-freeze crusts are likely. A temperature inversion may inhibit some surfaces below treeline to fully soften. Soft/dry snow can be sniffed out near and above treeline in protected gullies, bowls, and extremely shaded timber.
