The avalanche danger is Low today. Multiple days of melt/freeze has strengthened the snowpack and made triggering avalanches unlikely. The exception to this will be in very steep sunlit terrain. There it will be possible to trigger shallow wet loose avalanches. Persistent weak layers that were active a week ago and buried 1-3 feet deep have gone dormant for the time being. While the likelihood of triggering slabs on these layers is very low, it is important to evaluate the snowpack in steep upper elevation terrain prior to committing to a particular slope. Remember that Low danger does not mean ‘No’ danger. Practice safe travel protocols in steep terrain by exposing one person at a time, utilizing islands of safety and communicating your plan with your partners.

Expect mostly dry conditions overnight and into tomorrow. Occasional flurries are possible in the Togwotee Pass/Continental Divide area with accumulations of less than an inch. Temperatures will drop overnight into the teens to low twenties between 8,000-9,000 feet. Daytime highs in that elevation band tomorrow will climb into the mid thirties. Winds will gradually slow down from 25 mph into the 10-15 mph range tomorrow and be out of the west.Expect minimal change in the snowpack situation tomorrow. Temperatures at all elevations will be low enough to allow for another night of crust formation and overall strengthening of the snowpack. Avalanches will be unlikely with the exception being low volume wet loose avalanches on very steep sunlit slopes during the heat of the day. The danger will be Low throughout the day. Remember that Low does not mean “No”. Be aware of changing conditions and be prepared to adjust your plans if encountering unstable snow.
