Avalanche Activity

The surface of the snowpack will only just freeze. From late morning the natural activity of medium moist avalanches will increase.

From the early morning as the moisture increases there will be a gradual increase in the danger of moist avalanches. In the regions exposed to heavier precipitation small and medium-sized dry and moist avalanches are to be expected. These can be released in near-surface layers, even by a single winter sport participant. The avalanche prone locations are to be found in particular on very steep slopes at intermediate and high altitudes. The wind slabs of Friday remain in some cases prone to triggering at high altitude, caution is to be exercised in particular adjacent to ridgelines and in pass areas on steep slopes. In high Alpine regions these avalanche prone locations are more prevalent.

Snowpack Structure

15 to 20 cm of snow fell on Friday above approximately 2300 m. The soft wind slabs of Friday are covered with new snow in some cases and therefore difficult to recognise. At high altitudes and in high Alpine regions snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind. In some cases the various wind slabs have bonded still only poorly with the old snowpack, in particular at high altitude. Sunshine and high temperatures gave rise to gradual moistening of the old snowpack below approximately 2800 m. Individual weak layers exist in the snowpack in shady places that are protected from the wind, especially above approximately 2400 m.

Tendency

Some fresh snow as well as all the wind slabs represent the main danger. The danger of natural avalanches will decrease.
