Avalanche Activity

The wind slabs represent the main danger.

The wind will be moderate to strong. The avalanche prone locations are to be found in particular adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls above approximately 1900 m. In some localities light snowfall at intermediate altitudes. Large quantities of fresh snow and the wind-drifted snow of the last two days can be released easily, or, in isolated cases naturally above the tree line.

Snowpack Structure

The fresh wind slabs are poorly bonded with the old snowpack. The wind will be strong at times. The fresh snow and the wind slabs that are being formed by the wind will be deposited on soft layers in particular on shady slopes at elevated altitudes. The avalanche prone locations are to be found at the base of rock walls and behind abrupt changes in the terrain and adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls. Mostly the avalanches are medium-sized. Individual weak layers exist in the old snowpack in the vicinity of peaks. Backcountry touring calls for experience in the assessment of avalanche danger and a certain restraint.
