Points saillants

Large wet loose avalanches will be likely on steep, rocky slopes that receive direct spring sunshine. Rollerballs are a good sign that the problem is getting worse. Move away from avalanche terrain as the snow surface gets wet to reduce your risk.

    Up to 2 feet of cold, dry snow will see above-freezing temperatures and sunny skies for the first time today. It won't take much for unstable wet snow to develop at the surface, and wet loose avalanches will become likely. Avalanches will be larger and more widespread in the northern half of the forecast area and near the Crest, where the most snow accumulated over the weekend. They could also be bigger on the downwind sides of ridges and in chutes where winds filled in starting zones.

    Watch for sticky, moist surface snow, rollerballs, and recent sluffs as the first warning signs. As the sun warms the surface, avoid steep rocky slopes and chutes to limit your exposure. You can move to colder slopes with lower slope angles and minimal overhead hazards to avoid the problem.

Avalanche Discussion

A stormy weekend resulted in up to 2 feet of cold, cohesionless snow in the northern half of the forecast area. Over the past several days, small to large soft slab avalanches and dry loose sluffs have been triggered or run naturally. A few were initiated from cliff bands getting hit by the sun yesterday. 

The recent snow rests atop a layer of graupel from the 11th, with a hard melt-freeze crust underneath. At lower elevations and on solar aspects, the snow has barely covered the rock, logs, bushes, and bare ground that had melted out over the previous weeks. Obstacles are hard to see and descending below about 9,000 feet can be downright treacherous.
