Avalanche Activity

Watch out for slabs of new snow!

Moderate avalanche danger (2nd degree) is declared in the high altitudes of the High Tatras. The snow from the last snowfall period, where up to 20 cm of new snow fell locally at the highest altitudes, is mainly on the leeward slopes of southern orientations. Here, locally unstable snow slabs and pillows of varying thickness and hardness can be found. Mainly under saddles, rock walls, in moguls and steep couloirs. Avalanche release is possible especially with high additional loads.

Snowpack Structure

After a period of warm weather, a crust will form due to cooling. At the highest altitudes there is still dry snow formed into snow slabs and pillows. At altitudes up to 1500 m above sea level, there is only patchy snow cover.

Tendency

Enduring.
