Avalanche Summary

Numerous naturally triggered wind slab avalanches up to size 1.5 were reported on primarily northerly aspects in the alpine on Monday.

If you go into the backcountry, please consider submitting your observations to the Mountain Information Network.

Snowpack Summary

20 to 30 cm of recent snow and strong southwest wind have formed wind slabs on lee features at treeline and above.

The recent snow overlies a crust on all slopes except true north facing terrain at upper elevations where the previous snow remained dry.

Many areas below treeline are either snow free or have very thin snow coverage. Expect difficult travel at lower elevations.

Terrain and Travel Advice

  • Avoid steep, rocky, and wind effected areas where triggering slabs is more likely.
  • Be especially cautious as you transition into wind affected terrain.
  • Watch for signs of instability like whumpfing, hollow sounds, shooting cracks or recent avalanches.
  • Back off slopes as the surface becomes moist or wet with rising temperatures.
