Points saillants

The weekend storm dropped one to one and a half feet of heavy snow at mid and upper elevations. On shaded aspects at upper elevations the snowpack rests on weak layers of faceted snow over firm crusts.

    On northerly to easterly aspects at upper elevations people have the potential to trigger dangerous, firm avalanches to two feet in depth on steep terrain. Slides will be difficult to predict and may need larger triggers such as snow machines or more than one person at a time on a slope. At mid and low elevations the snowpack is mostly stable but be alert to the possibility of isolated pockets of slab on steep, north facing slopes at mid elevations.

Avalanche Discussion

Dry conditions will continue into Wednesday then clouds will move into the area as a weak system approaches Wednesday night. Morning lows will be in the mid teens then daytime highs at 9,500 feet will warm to the mid thirties. Winds on the ridges will be southwesterly at 10 - 20 miles per hour.At upper elevations on steep, northerly aspects in the Tetons the avalanche hazard will be Moderate. Weaknesses within the snowpack will hold the possibility for people to trigger firm slabs to three feet in depth. Avalanches will be hard to predict with triggers possibly from heavier loads or someone finding the thin, weak area of a slab. Careful route finding and snowpack evaluation is advised for travel in these areas.In the Togwotee Pass/Continental Divide and Greys River/Southwest Trails areas the hazard is expected to be Low. Firm slabs to two feet in depth could be triggered by users on isolated, steep, northerly slopes at upper elevations.
