You can trigger a small avalanche in wind-drifted snow above treeline. The most dangerous slopes face north through east through southeast, where new snow and moderate winds combine to form cohesive slabs. Look for and avoid pillowy or lens-shaped pockets of snow below ridgelines, in cross-loaded gullies or couloirs, or on convex rollovers in the alpine. The best and safest travel conditions are on lower-angle slopes, protected from the wind.
